You know, that Despicable Me, that movie, my grandkids, they watch it all the time. They just love them little yellow fellas, runnin’ around, talkin’ gibberish. Reminds me of chickens, the way they cluck and carry on. Anyways, they got me watchin’ it too, and I gotta say, it ain’t half bad. But they always askin’ me, “Grandma, are there other films like Despicable Me?” So I done some lookin’, and here’s what I found.

That Toy Story, that was somethin’ else. All them toys comin’ to life. First one all made on them computers, just like that Despicable Me! Them fellas with computers sure are smart these days. Back in my day, we didn’t have nothin’ like that. We had sticks and rocks, and we were happy! But these films like Despicable Me, they got somethin’ special. They just funny and good for the whole family, make you happy.
My grandkids, they’re always glued to that screen. Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, somethin’ called Disney+. It’s all a blur to me. But they find all sorts of movies on there. They say there’s a bunch like Despicable Me. That Gru fella, and Lucy, and them three little girls, Margo, Edith, and Agnes. They a handful, I tell ya! Reminds me of my own kids, always gettin’ into trouble.
I heard there’s a whole bunch of movies that are kinda like Despicable Me. They say 78 or somethin’ like that, can you believe it? 78! There is a list somewhere on that Letterboxd thingamajig. Made by some folks down in New Zealand, they say. Uses information from somethin’ called TMDb. It is all too much for this old brain, I tell ya. And they talkin’ about Reddit, and the best Despicable Me movie. I don’t know nothin’ about that.
- The Incredibles, that’s one of them. Some superhero family. They got powers and they fight bad guys. That’s what the young’uns tell me. That’s a good one, they say, just like Despicable Me, but with superpowers.
- There is this other one called Megamind. They is blue and bald, and always up to no good, but kinda in a good way, kinda not sure. Some folks say it’s even better than Despicable Me. Can you imagine? I think that’s crazy talk.
Now, there’s gonna be another Despicable Me, number 4, they say. Comin’ out soon, July 3rd, 2024, in them movie theaters. That’s the only place you can see it, for now, they say. Gotta go to the picture show to see it. We used to go to the drive-in, back in the day. Pile everyone in the car, watch the movie under the stars. Those were the days. I hear it is some bad guy, Maxime Le Mal. I guess this Gru fella, he’s got another bad guy to fight, now with his family. Gettin’ bigger, that family. And there’s another little baby, too. More mouths to feed!
And that Dru fella, Gru’s brother with the hair, he’s in it too. I don’t know why though, that fella, he’s a little strange. Only shows up at the end, they say. Probably up to no good, as usual.
These films like Despicable Me, they all got somethin’ in common. They got that funny bone, you know? Make you laugh, make you feel good. Good for the whole family. Kids love ’em, grown-ups love ’em. Even old folks like me can get a chuckle out of ’em.

So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to watch with the little ones, somethin’ like Despicable Me, you got plenty of choices. Just gotta figure out all them newfangled gadgets and doohickeys. It’s a lot to keep up with, I tell ya. But it’s worth it, to see them little faces light up. Makes an old lady’s heart happy.
Just remember to enjoy the time with your family. That’s what these movies are all about, I reckon. Family and fun. And them little yellow fellas. They are just silly. But you know what? Sometimes, silly is good. We all need a little silly in our lives. Especially these days, with the way the world is and everything. So if you need something happy, films like Despicable Me, they will be good.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear my grandkids callin’. They probably want to watch that Gru fella again. Time flies when you’re havin’ fun, they say. And with them little ones, it sure does. They grow up so fast. Too fast, if you ask me. Gotta cherish every moment. Every laugh, every hug. Every movie, even the silly ones with them little yellow fellas. They the best.
