Alright, let’s talk about that Evangelion thing, the one with the big robot. I heard folks callin’ it “Evangelion Opening Lyrics,” so that’s what we’ll call it too. Don’t know much about it, but my grandson, he watches it all the time. Loud music, big robots fightin’… He says it’s deep, whatever that means.
So, the song, right? It starts with somethin’ like “Zankoku na Tenshi no TE-ZE,” sounds like gibberish to me, but the boy says it’s Japanese. Says it means somethin’ like “Cruel Angel’s Thesis.” Now, I don’t know what a thesis is, but “cruel angel”? That sounds about right. Them angels in the show, they ain’t no fluffy little cherubs, that’s for sure. They’re big and scary, and they cause a whole heap of trouble.
Then there’s this part, “Shounen yo shinwa ni nare.” My grandson says it means somethin’ like “Young boy, become a legend.” See, that’s what I’m talkin’ about! Always tellin’ the young’uns to do somethin’ big. But this boy, in the show, he’s got a lot on his shoulders. Drivin’ that big robot, fightin’ them angels… it ain’t no easy job.
- Big robots, loud noises
- Angels that ain’t friendly
- A boy who’s gotta be a legend
The song keeps goin’ on about “aoi kaze” – blue wind, apparently. And somethin’ about a door to the heart bein’ knocked on. Sounds kinda poetic, don’t it? But I reckon it’s just fancy talk for feelin’s. You know, like when you’re scared or lonely or somethin’. This boy in the robot, he’s probably got a lot of those feelin’s, what with all the fightin’ and such.
There’s a line that goes, “Watashi dake wo tada mitsumete.” My grandson says it means, “Only look at me.” Now, who’s sayin’ that? Is it the angel? Is it the robot? Or is it some other lady in the show? I tell ya, these stories, they’re always full of drama. Always some woman wantin’ all the attention. Reminds me of my sister-in-law, always gotta be the center of everything.
And then there’s more talk about guidin’ to the future and overflowin’ somethin’. I guess it’s about the boy’s destiny or somethin’. Everythin’s always about destiny in these shows. Gotta save the world, gotta be a hero… It’s a lot of pressure for a young fella, if you ask me.

Now, they also talk about somethin’ called an “S2 Engine.” Sounds like somethin’ you’d find in a tractor, but apparently it’s what gives them angels all that power. And the robot, the Evangelion, it can use that power too. Sounds dangerous to me. Makin’ machines with too much power, that’s how things go wrong. Just like that time my cousin Jed put a bigger engine in his lawnmower, ended up tearin’ up the whole yard.
Anyway, the song keeps goin’ on, “Like an angel who has forsaken sympathy, rise up, young boy, and make yourself a legend.” That’s pretty much the whole thing in a nutshell, ain’t it? It’s about fightin’, and destiny, and bein’ a legend. And it’s all wrapped up in this fancy Japanese language and loud music. Makes my head spin, but the boy seems to like it. He says it’s deep, but to me, it just sounds like a whole lot of hollerin’ and screamin’. But hey, that’s what the young folks like these days, I guess. They like their music loud and their robots big. Me, I’d rather listen to somethin’ a little quieter, somethin’ with a good beat you can tap your feet to. But each to their own, I always say.
So that’s my take on that “Evangelion Opening Lyrics” thing. Don’t know if it makes much sense, but that’s how I see it. It’s a song about fightin’ angels, big robots, and a boy who’s gotta be a hero. And it’s all set to some pretty loud music. Not my cup of tea, but the grandson loves it, so I guess it can’t be all bad.
