Well, howdy there! Let’s yak a bit about somethin’ I heard on the radio the other day – songs about them playin’ cards. Yep, them little pieces of paper with pictures on ’em. Folks been singin’ about ’em for ages, it seems.

Now, I ain’t no fancy music expert or nothin’, but I know what I like. And I reckon a good song about cards gotta tell a story. Like that one, “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers. Heard that one a million times, and it still gets me. That fella knew a thing or two about life, and he told it all through them cards.
Then there’s that “Queen of Hearts” song. Don’t rightly remember who sings it, but it’s a catchy one. All about a woman, I guess, powerful like that queen card in the deck. Makes you think, don’t it? How them cards can stand for all sorts of things.
I also remember hearin’ somethin’ about a song called “Deck of Cards”. This one’s a bit different, not about gamblin’ so much, but about a soldier boy. Seems he got caught playin’ cards in church, of all places! But he used them cards to explain his beliefs, kinda like a preacher usin’ the Bible. Smart fella, that one.
- Now, there’s all kinds of card games, ain’t there? Poker, where folks bluff and bet big money.
- And then there’s them simple games like Go Fish, which the young’uns play. Guess there’s a song for every kinda game, if you look hard enough.
They say there’s even a song called “The Race Is On” by some fella named George Jones. Now, this one ain’t just about cards, it’s about a broken heart too. Seems like gamblin’ and heartbreak go together like biscuits and gravy, don’t they? When you’re gamblin’, you’re takin’ a chance, just like in love. And sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose big.
And speaking of losin’, there’s plenty of songs about that too. Songs about losin’ all your money, losin’ your girl, losin’ your way. Them cards, they can be a metaphor for life, see? Sometimes you get a good hand, sometimes you get a bad one. But you gotta keep playin’ the hand you’re dealt.
I even heard tell of a song with the words “High Stakes” in it. Now, that sounds serious. Makes me think of them high rollers, bettin’ thousands of dollars on a single hand. Must be excitin’, but I reckon it’s scary too. One wrong card, and you could lose it all.

There’s a whole bunch of musicians singin’ about cards, they say. Folks like Sting, and that woman Kim Carnes, and a bunch of others I ain’t never heard of. Seems like everybody’s got a card song in ’em, just waitin’ to be sung.
So, next time you’re listenin’ to the radio, pay attention. You might just hear a song about them cards. And when you do, think about the story it’s tellin’. ‘Cause them cards, they ain’t just pieces of paper. They’re about life, love, and everything in between.
And just so you know, a regular deck of cards has got 52 of them things. Four different suits – clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades – and each suit has got a king, a queen, and a jack. Them face cards, they call ’em. And them cards, well, they’re used for more than just playin’ games. Magicians use ’em, folks build houses out of ’em, and some folks just collect ’em like they was stamps or somethin’.
But the best thing them cards are used for, in my opinion, is tellin’ stories. And them stories, they sound even better when they’re sung in a good ol’ country song. So, turn up the radio, folks, and listen for them songs about cards. They’ll tell you a thing or two about life, I guarantee it.
