Okay, so I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, and today I finally got around to it: compiling a solid list of female friendship movies. I’ve always loved movies about strong female bonds, but sometimes they’re hard to find amidst all the rom-coms and action flicks.
First, I brainstormed. I just sat down with a notebook and jotted down every movie I could think of that even remotely fit the theme. This was kind of messy, with titles like “that one with the road trip” and “the one where they start a business” scribbled all over the page.
Next, I hit up Google. I searched for things like “best female friendship movies,” “movies about women supporting women,” and “girl power movies.” I opened up a bunch of articles and lists, and skimmed through them, adding more titles to my own list. Some of these I’d seen, some were totally new to me.
Then came the weeding out process. I started crossing off movies that were mostly about romance, or where the female friendship was more of a side plot. I really wanted to focus on movies where the central relationship was the friendship between women. This was tougher than I thought! A lot of movies claim to be about female friendship, but then the women end up fighting over a guy or something.
After that, I categorized things a bit. I made some rough groupings like:
- Coming-of-Age
- Road Trip Adventures
- Lifelong Friends
- Workplace Comrades
This helped me see what kinds of stories I was drawn to, and also made it easier to organize my final list. Some movies, fit mutiple catogries.
Finally, I watched a few trailers of the movies I hadn’t seen, just to get a feel for them. I also read a few reviews to see what other people thought. The movie have good * I picked out a few that I definitely want to watch soon!
It took longer that I want, I did it. I made the list for my own, that’s great.
