Well, howdy there! Let’s yak about somethin’ everyone sees – the sun! Yep, that big ol’ ball of fire in the sky. Turns out, folks been singin’ about it for ages. I ain’t no expert, mind you, but I know a good tune when I hear one, and plenty of ’em are about that sunshine.

The Beatles, them fellas from across the pond, they got a song called “Here Comes the Sun”. Real cheerful thing, makes you wanna tap your feet. Simple words, but they get the job done. It’s like waitin’ all winter for spring to finally show up. That sun peekin’ through the clouds, warm on your face, that’s what that song’s all about.
Then there’s Johnny Cash. Now, he sang a song called “You Are My Sunshine”, but his version ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s kinda slow and sad, more like a cloudy day than a bright one. But that’s life, ain’t it? Sometimes the sun shines, sometimes it don’t. Still a good song, though, tugs at your heartstrings.
And how about that “Walking on Sunshine” song by Katrina and The Waves? Now that’s a happy one! Makes you wanna jump around and dance. It’s like bein’ in love, all giddy and lightheaded. That feeling when everything’s goin’ your way, that’s what that song’s talkin’ about.

- Johnny Cash’s “You Are My Sunshine”
- Katrina and The Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine”
Some songs, they ain’t so happy-go-lucky. Take “House of The Rising Sun” by The Animals. That one’s a bit of a mystery, where it come from and all. But it’s been around a long time, folks singin’ it for generations. It ain’t about the sun shinin’ bright, it’s more about a place, and maybe some trouble. But the sun’s in the title, so it counts, right?
There’s a whole bunch of other songs too. Eagles got “Tequila Sunrise”, which is kinda like watchin’ the sunset, thinkin’ ‘bout life and love. The Beach Boys, them beach bums, they sang about “Kokomo”, which makes you dream of sunshine and sandy beaches. And then there’s all them country songs, like Garth Brooks’ “Ain’t Goin’ Down (‘til the Sun Comes Up)”, a real party song. Bruce Springsteen, he’s got one called “Waitin’ on a Sunny Day”. See? Lots of folks singin’ ’bout the sun.
Why do they sing about it? Well, ’cause the sun’s important, that’s why. It gives us light, makes things grow. It warms us up on a cold day. It’s just… there, ya know? Every day, shinin’ down on us. And it makes for some mighty fine songs, that’s for sure.

Some young fellers in a band called Seventeen, they even made a whole album called “Face the Sun”. Don’t know much about ‘em, but seems like the sun’s a big deal everywhere, not just here. And that’s a good thing. We need the sun. We need the music. They go together, like biscuits and gravy.
So, next time you hear a song about the sun, take a minute to listen. Think about how that big ol’ ball of fire up there affects everything. Makes you appreciate things a little more, you know?
In short, the sun is a big deal in music. From happy songs to sad ones, that bright light in the sky gives folks somethin’ to sing about. And that’s just fine by me.
And that’s all I gotta say about that.
