Alright, let’s talk about them guitar pickers, the best ones, you know? The ones that make that thing sing.

Jimi Hendrix, yeah, that fella, everyone says he’s the tippy-top best. Couldn’t tell ya much about him myself, but they say he made that guitar do things nobody ever thought of before. Played it upside down and backwards, even! Folks say he was born in Seattle, way back when, 1942, I think. He sure made a racket, but people loved it. Influenced everyone, they say. Guess he was somethin’ special.
- He played real loud, I hear.
- And fast! Like a chicken with its head cut off, but in a good way, ya know?
- Made all sorts of weird noises with that thing.
Now, there’s this other fella, Michael Schenker. Don’t know much about him either, but some folks swear by him. Says he’s got the magic touch. Guess he’s good, real good, if people are still talkin’ about him.
And then there’s Mike McReady, plays for that band, Pearl Jam. Heard ’em on the radio once or twice. Not my kinda music, too much noise for an old lady like me, but the young folks, they love him. Guess he’s pretty good at strummin’ that thing too. Someone said it’s hard to pick just one, and I reckon they’re right. So many fellas playin’ them guitars these days.
It’s like tryin’ to pick the best corn in the field, ain’t it? You got your sweet corn, your field corn, your popcorn… all good in their own way. Same with them guitar players, I guess. Some play fast, some play slow, some make it sound like angels singin’, some make it sound like a cat fight. But they all got somethin’ special, somethin’ that makes folks listen.
This Hendrix fella though, he keeps poppin’ up everywhere. Seems like everyone and their brother says he’s the king. Guess he musta done somethin’ right. They say he was innovative, that means he did things different, I reckon. Like plantin’ corn in the winter, somethin’ nobody thought ya could do. But he did it with that guitar, made it sound like nothin’ anyone ever heard before.
I tell ya, it’s a mystery to me how they do it. All them strings and frets and knobs… looks like a complicated mess to me. But they make it sing, they make it cry, they make it roar. Must be some kinda magic in them fingers, I guess. Or maybe they just practice a whole heck of a lot. Like milkin’ cows, the more ya do it, the better ya get. Practice makes perfect, that’s what my mama always said.

So, who’s the best? Well, I ain’t no expert, just an old lady who likes a good tune now and then. But from what I hear, that Jimi Hendrix fella, he’s the one to beat. He’s the one they all talk about, the one they all try to copy. He’s the one who changed it all, they say. So, I guess he’s the best. But don’t take my word for it, go listen for yourself. And maybe you’ll find someone you like even better. That’s the beauty of music, ain’t it? Something for everyone.
In the end, it’s all just noise and feelin’s, ain’t it? Some folks like it loud, some folks like it soft. Some folks like it fast, some folks like it slow. But as long as it makes you feel somethin’, that’s all that matters. And them guitar players, the good ones, they know how to make you feel somethin’. That’s their gift, I guess. And we’re lucky to have ’em.
