Well now, I reckon most folks know a thing or two about children’s TV, don’t they? Been around since, well, forever, it seems. Kids these days, they watch all sorts of things. Back in my day, it was just a few channels, and you watched what was on, or you went outside and played. But these shows, some of ‘em are alright, and some… well, some just make you scratch your head and wonder what in the tarnation they were thinkin’.

I remember this one show, had this character, always grumpy, always yellin’. Reminded me of old Mr. Henderson down the road, always complainin’ about the kids playin’ too loud. This TV fella, though, he was somethin’ else. Always makin’ a fuss about nothin’, scared the bejeebers outta the little ones, I tell ya. My grandbaby, little Susie, she’d hide behind the sofa whenever he came on screen. Said he looked like a grumpy old toad.
And the things they said on these shows sometimes! “Straight out of my body and onto your plate,” one of ’em said. Lord have mercy! Made me wanna lose my lunch, I tell ya. What kind of talk is that for kids? Back in my day, you’d get a bar of soap in your mouth for talkin’ like that. Now, they put it on TV and call it entertainment. Goes to show ya how the world’s changed, ain’t it?
Then there’s the shows that try to be funny, but just end up bein’ silly. Kids runnin’ around, makin’ a mess, and the grown-ups just standin’ there, laughin’. Reminds me of that time the neighbor’s kids got into the paint and painted the whole darn dog blue! Funny then, maybe, but not somethin’ you wanna see every day on the TV. I like a good laugh as much as the next person, but some of it just ain’t right.
- Some of these shows are just plain shocking, I tell ya.
- Things happen that make you gasp and say, “Well, I never!”
- And the cameos! You see folks you haven’t seen in years, pop up outta nowhere. Like seein’ old Aunt Mildred at the county fair, after she said she was movin’ to Florida.
And the sounds! Loud noises, silly music, all the time. Makes my head spin, it does. They say sound brings back memories, but all these shows bring back is a headache. Give me a good old-fashioned story any day, with characters you can understand and music that don’t make you wanna stick cotton in your ears. I like a good laugh but not if it blows my eardrums out.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ all kids’ TV is bad. There’s some good ones out there, teachin’ kids about kindness and sharin’ and all that. But these grumpy characters, they just get under my skin. Always complainin’, always fussin’, never a kind word to say. They ain’t teachin’ kids nothin’ but how to be miserable. And that ain’t right, not one bit.
Some folks say these characters are iconic, but I just call ‘em annoying. Like that fella on that show set in a hotel. Always yellin’ at folks, makin’ a scene. Kids think it’s funny, maybe, but I just see a grown man actin’ a fool. And the shows where they recreate famous scenes with kids? Lord, have mercy! It’s like watchin’ a monkey try to drive a tractor. Cute for a minute, but then you just want it to stop.

And don’t even get me started on those shows that are supposed to be for kids but have all this complicated stuff goin’ on. Like that one with the robots, always talkin’ about feelings and destiny and whatnot. Confusin’ as all get-out, if you ask me. Kids should be watchin’ shows about animals and singin’ songs, not worryin’ about the meaning of life. Keep it simple, that’s what I say.
So, there ya have it. My two cents on these grumpy TV characters. Maybe I’m just an old woman who don’t understand the youngsters these days. But I reckon a little bit of kindness and a whole lot less grumpiness wouldn’t hurt nobody, especially not the little ones watchin’ TV.
