Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this Stevie Wonder fella. Folks say he’s somethin’ special, a real music man. Can’t see a lick, bless his heart, been blind since the day he was born. But lordy, can he make a tune! They say he’s from Michigan, that Detroit place, you know, where all them cars come from. Grew up poor, I reckon, but music lifted him right up outta there.

Now, I ain’t no music expert, mind you. I just like what sounds good. And Stevie Wonder, well, he makes a whole lotta good sounds. They say he’s sold a hundred million records or somethin’. That’s a whole lotta records, I tell ya! Enough to fill up a whole barn, maybe two! And he’s got awards comin’ outta his ears. Grammys, they call ’em. Sounds fancy, don’t it? He even got one of them Oscar things, for a song he wrote for a movie. Heard tell he plays all sorts of instruments too. Piano, harmonica, drums… you name it, he can probably play it. A real one-man band, that Stevie.
Folks keep askin’ me, “What’s Stevie Wonder’s best songs?” Well, that’s like askin’ which piece of pie is the best. They’re all good, just depends on what you’re in the mood for. But if I had to pick a few, I’d say these are some real toe-tappers:
- “Superstition” Now, that one’s got a beat that’ll make you wanna get up and dance, even if you got two left feet like me. It’s all about bad luck and things you shouldn’t mess with. Keeps you on your toes, that song does.
- “Isn’t She Lovely” Oh, this one’s just beautiful. He wrote it for his little girl, you know. It’s so sweet and pure, it’ll melt your heart like butter on a hot biscuit. Makes you wanna hug your own young’uns tight.
- “Sir Duke” This one’s a tribute to all them great musicians, Duke Ellington and folks like that. It’s got a real happy sound, makes you wanna smile and clap your hands. Gets you thinkin’ ‘bout the good ol’ days, even if you weren’t there.
- “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” Now, ain’t that just the sweetest thing? A love song, plain and simple. Makes you wanna cuddle up with your loved one and just sway back and forth. Good for slow dancin’ at a barn dance, I reckon.
- “Living for the City” This one’s a bit different. It’s about hard times and tryin’ to make it in the big city. It’s got a powerful message, makes you think about folks who are struggling. A bit sad, but important too.
- “I Just Called to Say I Love You” Now this one here, it’s as simple as can be. Just a fella callin’ up to say he loves someone. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that, is there? It’s a sweet song, real easy to listen to. Heard it on the radio all the time back in the day.
- “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” Oh, this one gets your feet tappin’ for sure! It’s about being head over heels for somebody and just letting them know it. A real feel-good song, makes you wanna jump and shout. Good for a party, or just for singin’ along in the kitchen.
- “Higher Ground” This one’s got a strong message about keepin’ on goin’, even when things get tough. It’s got a powerful beat and Stevie’s voice just soars. Makes you wanna stand up tall and face whatever comes your way.
- “That’s What Friends Are For” Now this one is about stickin’ together with your friends, through thick and thin. It’s a beautiful song, real heartwarming. Reminds you how important it is to have good folks around you.
There’s a whole bunch more, of course. Stevie Wonder’s got more songs than I got chickens, and that’s sayin’ somethin’! He’s a true talent, that’s for sure. Blind as a bat, but he sees the world through music, I reckon. And he shares that vision with all of us, through his songs. So next time you’re feelin’ down, or just wanna tap your toes, put on some Stevie Wonder. He’ll lift your spirits, sure as the sun rises in the mornin’. He’s been makin’ music for a long time now, and I reckon he’ll keep on makin’ it for as long as he can. And that’s a good thing, a real good thing.
Stevie Wonder ain’t just singin’ songs, he’s tellin’ stories. Stories about love, and life, and hard times, and joy. And he does it all with that voice of his, that voice that can make you laugh and cry, all in the same song. He’s a gift, that Stevie Wonder, a true gift to the world. And I’m just glad I got to hear his music in my lifetime.
So go on, give him a listen. You won’t be sorry. And if you don’t know where to start, well, just pick any one of them songs I mentioned. They’re all good, I promise ya. Just like a good piece of apple pie.
