Well, I reckon it’s ’cause it helps ’em get it off their chest. You know, like talkin’ to a friend, only instead of talkin’, they’re singin’. And maybe, just maybe, it helps other folks feel like they ain’t alone. ‘Cause we all got regrets, don’t we? Every single one of us.

Oh, honey, you wouldn’t believe it. Seems like ever since they started makin’ music, folks been singin’ about regret. You got your old-timey country singers, your rock and rollers, your pop stars, even them rappers, they all singin’ about it. It’s like a never-endin’ story, ’cause life’s just full of regrets, I guess. I heard tell there’s lists of ’em, these songs, all over the internet. Folks makin’ lists of the best ones, the saddest ones, the ones that make you cry the most. I ain’t got no computer, so I wouldn’t know nothin’ ’bout that, but my grandson, he’s always lookin’ at that stuff.
Do these songs help?
Well, I don’t know if they can fix what’s done, but sometimes it helps just to hear someone else singin’ about the same kinda stuff you’re feelin’. Makes you feel a little less alone, you know? And sometimes, them songs, they can remind you to try and do better next time. ‘Cause ain’t nobody perfect, and we all gonna make mistakes. But maybe, just maybe, if we listen to them songs and think about what they’re sayin’, we can learn somethin’ and not make the same mistakes again. Or at least, not as many of ’em.

Now, I ain’t gonna pretend I know all them fancy singers, but I heard some names. Like that fella, Johnny Cash, he sang about mistakes. And that woman with the big hair, Cher, she sang about it too. And even some of them young folks today, they singin’ about regret. It just goes to show you, it don’t matter who you are or where you come from, regret is somethin’ we all gotta deal with.
So, next time you hear a sad song on the radio, don’t just turn it off. Listen to the words. Maybe that singer is tryin’ to tell you somethin’. Maybe they’re tryin’ to tell you that you ain’t alone.
