Well, howdy there! Let me tell ya, I ain’t no fancy music expert or nothin’, but I do like a good tune, even them spooky ones about ghosts. Yep, ghosts! Them see-through fellas that wander around after they’re gone. So, I figured, why not jaw a bit about some of them contemporary songs about ghosts, you know, the ones the young’uns are listenin’ to these days?

Now, I heard tell of a band called Ghost. Sounds about right, don’t it? They got this song called “Mary on a Cross”. Folks seem to like it a whole heap, sayin’ it got a whole bunch of views online. Millions, I reckon. Don’t know much about it myself, but if that many folks are listenin’, must be somethin’ to it. Maybe it’s got a good beat, somethin’ you can tap your feet to. Or maybe it’s just spooky enough to make your hair stand on end. Either way, it’s about somethin’ ghostly, that much I know.
Then there’s this other song, “Haunting You” by a group called Badflower. Now, that one’s a bit more straightforward, ain’t it? It’s from the ghost’s point of view, see? Like he’s singin’ right to ya from beyond the grave. That’s what I heard, anyhow. Gives me the shivers just thinkin’ about it. Imagine a ghost whisperin’ in your ear, singin’ you a song. Creepy, right? But folks seem to eat it up. They like bein’ scared, I guess. Young folks these days, always lookin’ for a thrill.
- Can’t forget the oldies, though. Even back in my day, they had songs about ghosts.
- There was this one song “The Ghost in You” by some band with a long name, The Psychedelic somethin’-or-other. That was way back in the eighties, I think. Still holds up, though. A good song is a good song, no matter when it was made.
- And then there’s that jazzy fella Cab Calloway, he sang “The Ghost of Smokey Joe” way back in the thirties. Now that’s a song that makes you wanna get up and dance, even with ghosts. See, ghosts ain’t always scary, sometimes they just wanna have a good time, just like us.
Now, if you go on that there internet, you’ll find all sorts of lists of ghost songs. Folks call ‘em “playlists,” I think. They got all kinds of songs, sad ones, scary ones, even funny ones, all about ghosts. Twenty-one of ‘em, some say. Must be somethin’ about ghosts that just grabs people’s attention, makes ‘em wanna sing and listen. Maybe it’s the mystery of it all, wonderin’ what happens after we’re gone. Or maybe it’s just plain fun to be a little bit scared.
I tell ya, these songs about ghosts, they ain’t just noise. They tell stories, see? Stories about love and loss, about regrets and revenge. And sometimes, they just tell a good ol’ spooky tale. And ain’t nothin’ wrong with that. A good story, whether it’s about a ghost or a farmer or a stray dog, it sticks with ya. It makes ya think, makes ya feel. And that, my friends, that’s what music is all about. So next time you hear a song about a ghost, don’t just turn it off. Listen close. You might just learn somethin’. And if nothin’ else, you might get a good shiver down your spine.
So that’s all I got to say about these here songs about ghosts. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, just an old woman who likes a good tune. And if that tune happens to be about a ghost, well, that’s just fine by me. Keeps things interestin’, you know? So go on out there, find yourself some ghost songs, and give ‘em a listen. You might be surprised what you find. And who knows, maybe you’ll even see a ghost or two while you’re at it. Just don’t go lookin’ for trouble, ya hear?
Anyway, that’s enough jabberin’ from me. I gotta go make some supper. Biscuits and gravy tonight, if you’re curious. Y’all come back now, ya hear?
