Alright, alright, let’s talk about this… what’s it called? “Mukai-kun Manga”, yeah, that’s it. Never read no manga myself, picture books is all I ever saw, but my grandson, he’s always glued to them things. So, this Mukai fella, he’s a working man, just like my old man was, workin’ his fingers to the bone. Only difference is, this Mukai ain’t been with a woman in ten long years! Ten years! Can you believe it? Back in my day, if you weren’t hitched by twenty, folks started whisperin’.

This Mukai guy, he’s 35, and lives in his hometown. Sounds familiar, lots of young’uns stickin’ around these days, not like when we was young, always lookin’ to get out and see somethin’ new. Anyways, this Mukai, he had this girl, Miwako, and he told her, “I wanna protect ya.” Sounds nice, right? But somethin’ musta gone wrong, ’cause ten years later, he’s all alone. Maybe he didn’t protect her good enough, or maybe she just got tired of him, who knows?
They say he’s haunted by some college breakup. College! We didn’t have no college where I come from. Just learnin’ on the farm and in the fields. But I guess these young folks, they go to these colleges and learn all sorts of things, and then they break each other’s hearts. Seems like a waste of time and money to me.
This story, they say it’s about a fella who forgot how to be in a relationship. Forgot! How do you forget somethin’ like that? It’s like breathin’, ain’t it? You just do it. But I guess things are different now. Marriage ain’t the big deal it used to be, they say. Back then, gettin’ married was the whole point. Find a good man, raise a family, that’s all there was to it.
- Mukai’s single for 10 years, that’s a long time.
- He lives in his hometown, nothin’ wrong with that.
- He had a girl named Miwako, but they split up.
- He said he wanted to protect her, maybe he shoulda just loved her.
Now they got these “love stories”, and they ask what purpose they serve. Well, I’ll tell ya. Love stories are about hope, about findin’ someone to share your life with. Even if it don’t always work out, it’s still nice to dream, ain’t it? Even an old woman like me likes a good love story, though I prefer the kind on the TV, with all the pretty dresses and fancy houses.
This Mukai, he’s still thinkin’ about his past, they say. Grapplin’ with it. Well, I say, let it go! The past is the past. You gotta move on, find yourself a new girl, maybe someone who don’t need so much protectin’. Maybe someone who can protect him for a change. Life’s too short to be stuck in the past, that’s what I always say.
And this “After taking some time away from relationships and love”… what’s that all about? Sounds like he’s hidin’ from somethin’. Scared of gettin’ hurt again, maybe. But you can’t live your life hidin’, can ya? You gotta take chances, put yourself out there. Otherwise, you’ll end up like this Mukai, all alone at 35.

So, that’s what I got to say about this Mukai-kun Manga. Sounds like a sad story, but maybe it’s got a happy endin’. Maybe he finds someone, maybe he learns to love again. I hope so, for his sake. Nobody deserves to be alone, not even a fella who don’t know how to be in a relationship. We all need someone, that’s just the way it is.
Mukai story is kind of about today’s love, you see? It ain’t like it used to be, but it still makes you think about what matters, you know? Findin’ someone, sharin’ your life, and maybe protectin’ each other, but not too much, right? Just enough.
