Alright, let’s talk about this Kimi wa 008 thing. I ain’t no fancy book reader, mind you, but I heard folks yappin’ about it, so I figured I’d give it a go. Now, from what I gather, this Kimi wa 008, or “You Are 008” as them city folks say, is one of them Japanese picture books, a manga, they call it.

This fella, Syun Matsuena, he’s the one who drew all them pictures and wrote the story. Heard he worked on it for a good long while, from 2018 all the way to 2024. That’s a heap of time, let me tell ya. Published it in some magazine, Weekly Shonen Sunday, sounds like somethin’ you’d read after church, but I reckon it ain’t. They even put it all together in 33 books, reckon they call ’em “tankobon” volumes. Fancy, huh?
Now, the story, it’s about this kid, Akashi Eito. Poor fella couldn’t pass a school test to save his life, but somehow, and I mean somehow, he ends up in this special spy school. Imagine that! A kid who can’t tell his ABCs from his one-two-threes becomin’ a spy. Life’s funny that way, ain’t it?
The Characters
Like any good story, this Kimi wa 008 has a whole bunch of characters. I ain’t gonna list ’em all, ’cause frankly, I can’t remember half their names. But there’s this Eito fella, the main one, the one who ain’t so bright but somehow manages. And then there’s all his classmates and teachers, I reckon. Some good, some bad, some just plain weird. You know how it goes.
- Akashi Eito: The main guy, the one who’s supposed to be a spy even though he ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed.
- Other Students: A bunch of other kids, all learnin’ to be spies. Some are probably real smart, some probably ain’t.
- Teachers: The folks teachin’ these kids how to be spies. Probably strict, probably got secrets of their own.
The heart of any of these mangas, they say, are the characters. They’re the ones that make the story move, and make you care about what happens. I guess that’s true for this Kimi wa 008 too. You got all sorts of personalities bumpin’ into each other, learnin’ and growin’. It’s like real life, only with more spies and less chores, I reckon.
The Story, As Far As I Can Tell

So, Eito, he’s in this spy school, and I guess he’s gotta learn all sorts of spy stuff. How to sneak around, how to fight, how to lie, probably. And he’s gotta do it all while tryin’ not to flunk out. Sounds like a handful to me.
Now, I ain’t read the whole thing, mind you. But from what I hear, it’s got action, it’s got laughs, it’s got a bit of everything. And it went on for a good long time, they say. Years and years of this Eito fella tryin’ to be a spy. Must’ve been somethin’ special to keep folks readin’ for that long.
Heard they even finished it up recently, wrapped up the whole story in just five chapters. Folks were talkin’ about the “climax” of the story, sounds like things got real excitin’ towards the end. I bet Eito finally figured out how to be a good spy, or maybe he didn’t. Maybe he found out spyin’ ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. I wouldn’t know, I ain’t read that far.
What I Think
So, what do I make of this Kimi wa 008? Well, I ain’t no expert, but it sounds like a good yarn. A kid who can’t do nothin’ right endin’ up in spy school? That’s the kind of story that makes you chuckle and think at the same time. And it’s a long one, so it must have kept folks hooked. Maybe someday I’ll sit down and read the whole thing myself, cover to cover. But for now, I’ll just listen to the young’uns talk about it. They seem to like it, and that’s good enough for me.
Final Thoughts

If you’re lookin’ for a story that’s a bit different, somethin’ with spies and laughs and a whole lot of heart, then maybe this Kimi wa 008 is for you. It sounds like a wild ride, with a fella who ain’t got no business bein’ a spy, becomin’ the best darn spy there is, maybe. Or maybe not. Like I said, I ain’t read the whole thing. But I reckon it’s worth a look, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Anyway, that’s my two cents on this Kimi wa 008. Take it or leave it. I’m just an old woman, what do I know about Japanese spy books?
