Well, howdy there, y’all! Let’s yak a bit about somethin’ I heard on the radio the other day – them Kansas City rappers. Now, I ain’t no spring chicken, and I sure don’t know much about this hip-hop stuff, but it seems like it’s a big deal for the young’uns.

I heard this fella on the radio, always talkin’ ’bout this fella Drake. Says he’s the big cheese of rappin’, the most-streamed rapper, whatever that means. Been on top for eight years straight! Imagine that! Eight years of folks listenin’ to this guy. Must be somethin’ special, though I reckon I’d rather listen to the crickets chirp on a summer night.
Anyways, they was talkin’ ’bout this Drake fella fightin’ with another rapper, Kendrick Lamar. Fightin’ with words, mind you, not fists. They call it a “diss track battle,” sounds like somethin’ my rooster does in the mornin’, only less musical.
But then they started talkin’ ’bout rappers from Kansas City. Now, that’s closer to home, so I perked up my ears a bit. They mentioned some names… Tech N9ne, Big Scoob, Sol, Krizz Kaliko, and Mac Lethal. Never heard of ’em myself, but they say these fellas are the best around here.
- Tech N9ne
- Big Scoob
- Sol
- Krizz Kaliko
- Mac Lethal
Seems like Kansas City’s got its own little rap scene goin’ on. One fella on the radio even said there’s a bright future for it. Said somethin’ about “entrepreneurs” and hip-hop. Don’t rightly know what that means, but it sounds fancy.
I guess these Kansas City rappers, they ain’t as famous as that Drake fella, but they’re makin’ noise in their own way. They’re singin’ ’bout their lives, their city, and whatever else is on their minds. Just like them old country singers, only with a faster beat and a whole lot more… well, I don’t know what to call it. It ain’t singin’ exactly, and it ain’t talkin’ neither. It’s somethin’ in between.
There was even a video, they said, talkin’ about the best rappers in Kansas City in 2024. Imagine that! They’re makin’ videos about it now. It’s a whole different world, I tell ya. Back in my day, the only videos we had were the pictures we saw when we closed our eyes at night.
Phantom Pesos, that was another name they threw around. Said he’s a Kansas City artist and sees good things comin’ for the city’s hip hop. Happened back in May this year. Things sure do move fast these days. Can’t hardly keep up.
Now, I don’t rightly know if this Kansas City hip hop is any good, but it seems like folks around here are proud of it. And that’s somethin’, ain’t it? People findin’ somethin’ to be proud of, somethin’ to call their own. Whether it’s rappin’ or quiltin’ or growin’ the biggest tomatoes in the county, it’s all the same in the end.
So, there you have it, a little somethin’ about them Kansas City rap artists. I may not understand it, but I reckon it’s worth knowin’ about. After all, it’s part of the world we live in, ain’t it? And who knows, maybe one of these days I’ll even tap my foot to one of their tunes. But don’t hold your breath, y’all. I’m more of a “church hymns on Sunday mornin’” kind of gal.
Anyway, that’s all I got to say ‘bout them rappers. Time for me to go make some supper. Got a pot of beans simmerin’ on the stove and some cornbread bakin’ in the oven. That’s real music to my ears!
