Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Jane Shirley Smith, sounds like a fancy name, huh? Don’t rightly know if she’s one person or maybe a few, ’cause the name pops up all over the place. Like, you got your Facebook Jane Smith, always tryin’ to connect with folks. Facebook, that’s where all the young’uns hang out these days, sharin’ their pictures and whatnot. Don’t know what they’re sharin’, probably what they had for supper or some such thing.

Then there’s this other Jane Smith, the one they call “Senior Lecturer” at some fancy law school in London. City University, they call it. Sounds mighty important, that’s for sure. Lecturer, that means she talks a lot, I reckon. Probably teaches them youngsters about laws and such. Laws, now there’s a thing. Too many laws if you ask me, always tellin’ ya what you can and can’t do.
- Facebook Jane Smith: Connectin’ with folks online.
- Lecturer Jane Smith: Teachin’ at a big university.
- Bookish Jane Smith: Writin’ and readin’ all them books.
And wouldn’t ya know it, there’s another Jane Smith, this one’s a bookworm! Got hundreds of books on somethin’ called Goodreads, and folks are always ratin’ ’em. Says her most popular book is about some island, Wild Island they call it. Hebrides, wherever that is. Sounds cold and windy to me. Don’t know how she does it, sittin’ around writin’ all them books. Must have a strong backside, that’s for sure.
Now, when I hear “Shirley,” I think of that show, Laverne and Shirley. Used to watch it on the TV, back when TVs were big boxes and not these flat things they got now. Them girls were funny, always gettin’ into trouble. Underdogs, they called ’em. Guess that means they weren’t the fancy types, just regular folks like you and me. Comedy, that’s what it was. Made ya laugh, even when you were havin’ a bad day. These days, everything’s so serious, folks need a good laugh now and then.
So, you see, this Jane Shirley Smith, she’s a bit of a mystery. Could be one person, could be a bunch of ’em. Maybe they’re all related, maybe not. One’s on Facebook, one’s teachin’ at a big school, one’s writin’ books, and Shirley reminds me of a funny TV show. World’s a funny place, ain’t it? So many people, so many names, so many things to do. Makes my head spin just thinkin’ about it.
I tell ya, it’s hard to keep up with all these names and faces. Back in my day, folks had simple names, names you could remember. But now, everyone’s got these fancy double names, like they’re tryin’ to be someone important. Well, important or not, we’re all just folks, tryin’ to make our way in this world. Ain’t no shame in bein’ regular, that’s what I say. Regular folks, that’s who keeps the world goin’. We ain’t all got time to be writin’ books or teachin’ at fancy schools. Some of us gotta work hard, just to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads.
But I guess that’s the beauty of it, ain’t it? Everyone’s a little different, everyone’s got their own thing. Maybe that Facebook Jane Smith is happy sharin’ her pictures and connectin’ with folks. Maybe that Lecturer Jane Smith is proud of teachin’ them youngsters about the laws. And maybe that bookish Jane Smith just loves to tell stories. And who knows, maybe there’s even a Jane Shirley Smith out there who loves watchin’ reruns of Laverne and Shirley. It takes all kinds, I reckon.

So, the next time you hear the name Jane Shirley Smith, don’t go thinkin’ it’s just one person. Could be anyone, could be anywhere. Just like you and me, tryin’ to make our mark on the world, one way or another. And that, my friend, is all that matters. Bein’ yourself, doin’ what you love, and maybe, just maybe, makin’ someone smile along the way. That’s what life’s all about, if you ask me.
