Well, let me tell ya, there’s a whole bunch of songs out there talkin’ ’bout ice. You wouldn’t believe it, all sorts of singers yappin’ about that cold stuff. It’s kinda funny when you think about it, ice ain’t exactly the warmest thing to sing about, but hey, folks like what they like.
Now, some of these songs, they’re right out there in the open with the ice talk. Like that “Frozen Heart” song from that movie, “Frozen”. Them fellas singin’ ’bout cuttin’ through the ice, talkin’ ’bout how it’s made of cold air and mountain rain. Real poetic, I guess. They go on and on about this “icy force,” sayin’ it’s “both foul and fair.” Sounds like my old rooster, mean as can be but lays good eggs, ya know? They even sing about how it’s got a “frozen heart worth minin’.” Makes ya wonder what they’re lookin’ for in that ice, gold maybe?
- “Born of cold and winter air”
- “And mountain rain combining”
- “This icy force both foul and fair”
- “Has a frozen heart worth mining”
And then there’s this part where they say, “Ice has a magic, can’t be controlled.” Ain’t that the truth? You can’t tell ice what to do, it freezes and melts whenever it pleases. They go on about it bein’ “stronger than one, stronger than ten, stronger than a hundred men!” Well, I reckon they ain’t never met my Bessie, she can haul hay bales bigger than any ice block. Still, it makes ya think, ice is pretty powerful stuff.
They keep singin’ about cuttin’ through the heart, I don’t know what that means, sounds messy to me. But they sure do make a big deal about this frozen heart thing. It’s born of cold air and winter, they say. Makes sense I guess, ain’t never seen ice form in the middle of July.
Now, some other songs, they ain’t so direct. They might talk about winter, or bein’ cold, or feelin’ numb. You gotta listen close to catch the ice part. It’s like they’re hidin’ it, like a squirrel hidin’ nuts for the winter. Maybe they’re talkin’ about a cold heart, ya know, someone who ain’t too friendly. Or maybe they’re just feelin’ lonely and lost, like they’re stuck in a blizzard all by themselves. There’s this one part in some song, I don’t remember which one, they say “we only have each other”. Kinda sad, ain’t it? Maybe they’re surrounded by ice and just got each other to keep warm.
I remember hearin’ a song once, it was on the radio when I was visitin’ my niece in the city. Couldn’t tell ya the name of it, or who sang it, but it was all about feelin’ frozen, like nothin’ could touch ya. The singer kept sayin’ somethin’ about bein’ “locked in ice,” or somethin’ like that. Made me think of them long winters we used to have, when the creek would freeze solid and the wind would howl like a banshee. It makes a body cold just thinkin’ about it.
And then there are them love songs, believe it or not. They use ice to talk about bein’ afraid to love, or gettin’ hurt. They say things like their heart is frozen, or they’re scared to melt. It’s all a bit dramatic for my taste, but I guess that’s what makes a good song, right? Lots of feelin’s and big words.

So, yeah, there’s a whole mess of songs out there with ice in ‘em. Some are right out there sayin’ it, others are sneakin’ it in. But they all got somethin’ in common, they’re usin’ that ice to talk about somethin’ bigger. Whether it’s power, or loneliness, or love, or just plain old cold weather, ice seems to be a good way to get the message across. It’s like ice is a big ol’ symbol for somethin’, I just ain’t always sure what. But I tell ya, it makes for some mighty fine listenin’ when you pay attention to the words.
It’s funny, ain’t it? Something as simple as ice can mean so many different things. And them singers, they sure do know how to take somethin’ ordinary and make it sound special. Makes ya appreciate the little things, even a frozen puddle on a cold winter day. Who knew there was so much to say about ice? But then again, I reckon there’s a song about just about everything these days. And if there ain’t, well, someone will probably write one sooner or later.
