Well now, let’s talk about this fella, Emiliano Gallardo Ugalde. I don’t know much about fancy folks, ya know, but I heard some things, seen some things. This Emiliano, they say he’s someone important, or maybe related to someone important. Don’t rightly know which.
I reckon his mama is a big deal, a singer or somethin’. Ana Barbara, they call her. Heard she belts out them songs, the kind that make you wanna dance or cry, sometimes both at the same time. Never heard her myself, mind you. My old radio only picks up static half the time, and the other half, it’s just preachin’ or farm reports.
This Ana Barbara, she had three young’uns, and Emiliano is one of ‘em. Can you imagine? Three! I barely managed with the two I had, always runnin’ around, gettin’ into everything. Kids these days, I tell ya, they got it easy. Back in my day, we had to work, no time for all this singin’ and dancin’.
- But hey, times change, I guess.
- Emiliano, he probably had a different life than I did.
- Probably got them fancy clothes and went to them fancy schools.
I don’t know what he does, this Emiliano. Maybe he’s a singer too, like his mama. Or maybe he’s a doctor, a lawyer, or one of them fellas that fixes computers. City folks got all sorts of jobs we don’t have out here in the sticks. Out here, you farm, you raise animals, or you work at the feed store. That’s about it.
Heard tell Ana Barbara was born in some place called Rio Verde, San Luis Potosi. Fancy name, ain’t it? Sounds like a place with lots of green, maybe by a river. I ain’t never been much of a traveler myself. Born and raised right here, and I reckon I’ll die right here too. But it’s nice to think about other places, ain’t it? Imagine all the different kinds of folks livin’ out there, doin’ all sorts of different things.
Now, back to this Emiliano. Being the son of a famous singer, he probably gets a lot of attention. Folks always wantin’ somethin’ from ya, that’s the way it is with famous people. Hope he’s a good boy, though. Hope he treats his mama right. Family is important, ya know. More important than all the fame and money in the world.

I bet he’s got a nice house, a big one. Probably got one of them fancy cars, too. The kind that go real fast and make a lot of noise. We don’t need nothin’ like that out here. My old truck gets me where I need to go, and that’s good enough for me. But I guess if you got the money, you can spend it how you want.
Emiliano Gallardo Ugalde. It’s a mouthful of a name, ain’t it? Sounds important, like I said. Maybe he’ll be somethin’ big someday. Maybe he already is. I wouldn’t know. I’m just an old woman, sittin’ on my porch, watchin’ the world go by. But even out here, in the middle of nowhere, you hear things. You hear about the famous folks, the rich folks, the ones who live in a different world than you do.
I wonder if he ever comes out to the country, this Emiliano. I wonder if he ever smells the fresh air, sees the stars at night, without all them city lights gettin’ in the way. Probably not. City folks, they don’t know what they’re missin’. They got all their gadgets and their gizmos, but they don’t have the peace and quiet. They don’t have the connection to the land, to the animals, to the simple things in life.
Anyways, I wish him well, this Emiliano. Hope he finds happiness, whatever he does. And I hope he remembers where he came from, remembers his mama, and all the folks who helped him along the way. Cause that’s what matters, in the end. It ain’t about the money or the fame, it’s about the people you love, and the life you live. And that’s all I gotta say about that.
I heard tell there’s somethin’ called the internet now, where folks can find out anything about anyone. Maybe if you want to know more about Emiliano, you can look him up on that thing. Me, I’ll stick to my old ways. I’ll listen to the birds singin’, watch the sun go down, and mind my own business. That’s the life I know, and it’s a good enough life for me.
