So, I wanted to do something a bit different with the kids this weekend. We’ve been cooped up inside with all the rain, and I figured, why not have a movie marathon? But not just any movies – I went with a sci-fi theme. You know, to get their imaginations going and all that good stuff.

First off, I had to pick the movies. I didn’t want anything too crazy or scary, just some fun, engaging stuff. I remembered watching this old movie called “Explorers” when I was a kid. It’s about these teenagers who build a spaceship and go into outer space. Super cool, right? Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix are in it, which is a nice little bonus for us adults. It’s definitely a good one to start with, since it’s all about adventure and exploration and it is good for the kids.
- Sonic The Hedgehog – It’s a classic, and the kids love Sonic. It is not that sci-fi but it still have a little bit imagination in it.
- Chicken Little – This one’s a bit out there, with the whole “sky is falling” thing, but it has some fun space elements that I thought the kids would enjoy. It’s also a great way to start a conversation about, like, what’s out there in the universe.
- Apollo 11 – Okay, this one’s a documentary, but it’s so amazing! It’s got real footage from the moon landing, and it’s just mind-blowing to watch. I figured it would be a good way to show the kids that space travel isn’t just in the movies – it’s real!
Then I added a few more to the list:
We set up the living room like a little movie theater. We made some popcorn, got some blankets, and dimmed the lights. The kids were super excited. They loved “Explorers,” especially the part where the spaceship takes off. “Sonic” was a hit, of course, and they were cracking up at “Chicken Little.”
But the real winner was “Apollo 11.” They were totally captivated by the astronauts and the whole mission. It sparked so many questions, like “How did they get there?” and “What did they eat?” It was really cool to see them so engaged and curious about space. Some people might think this movie is boring for kids but I believe that this kind of movie is really good for kids to learn something.
Honestly, it turned out to be a really great weekend. We didn’t just watch movies, we learned something, we talked, and we bonded. It was a nice break from the usual routine, and it definitely got us all thinking about what’s beyond our little world. I’d totally recommend a sci-fi movie marathon for anyone looking for a fun and educational way to spend time with their kids. It’s a blast! We have watched Star Wars and Marvel movies so many times. That’s why I didn’t put them in the list. But they are also good movies.
