Well, howdy there! Today, we’re gonna yak about somethin’ real interesting, you know? It’s about them bands, the ones that play music, yeah, them fellas. But not just any bands, mind you. We’re talkin’ about the ones with animal names. You know, like them critters out in the barnyard, or in the woods, or even them fancy ones in the zoo. Bands with animal names, that’s what we’re on about.
Now, I ain’t no music expert, not one bit. But I do know a thing or two about animals, seein’ as how I grew up on a farm. And let me tell ya, some of these band names, they’re plum crazy! Makes ya wonder what them city folks were thinkin’ when they come up with ’em.
Take them Eagles for instance. Big ol’ birds, them eagles, flyin’ high and mighty. Heard their music on the radio once, pretty good stuff, even though I couldn’t understand half the words. Guess they picked that name ’cause they wanted to be big and powerful, just like them eagles. Makes sense, I reckon.
- Eagles – Big and powerful, like the bird.
- The Beatles – I heard it ain’t about the bugs. Don’t quite get it.
- Arctic Monkeys – Them monkeys must be freezing their tails off up there in the Arctic!
Then there’s them Beatles. Now, them fellas, they were somethin’ else. Everyone was crazy ‘bout ‘em when I was young. I heard the name ain’t got nothin’ to do with them crawly bugs, but I still can’t figure it out. City folks and their funny ideas, I tell ya. But their music, well, it was catchy, even this ol’ lady can admit that.
And how about them Arctic Monkeys? Monkeys in the Arctic? That just ain’t right! Monkeys are supposed to be in warm places, swingin’ from trees, eatin’ bananas. But I guess these fellas wanted to be different, stand out from the crowd. Can’t fault ’em for that, I suppose.
There’s a whole bunch more of ’em, you know. Bands named after wolves, and snakes, and even butterflies. Makes ya wonder why they choose them critters. Maybe they just like the way the name sounds. Or maybe they see somethin’ special in them animals, somethin’ that matches their music. Who knows? It’s a mystery, just like why the rooster crows at dawn.
Some folks say that pickin’ a band name is serious business. Gotta find somethin’ that sticks in people’s heads, somethin’ that tells ya what the music’s all about. And I guess animal names do just that. They give ya a picture, an idea, a feelin’. You hear the name The Black Crowes, and you think of somethin’ dark and mysterious. You hear White Snake, and you think of somethin’ sleek and dangerous. It’s all in the name, they say.

But me, I just think it’s fun. It’s fun to think about them city fellas sittin’ around, scratchin’ their heads, tryin’ to come up with the perfect name. And then, bam! They see a picture of a wolf, or a horse, or a cricket, and they say, “That’s it! That’s our name!”
So, next time you hear a song on the radio, pay attention to the band’s name. See if it’s an animal name. And if it is, think about that animal. Think about what it means, what it represents. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll understand a little bit more about the music, too.
It ain’t all that important, I guess, whether a band is called The Byrds or The Turtles or somethin’ else entirely. What matters is the music, right? If it makes ya tap your feet, if it makes ya feel somethin’, then that’s all that counts. But still, it’s fun to think about them animal names. It’s just one more little piece of the puzzle, one more little thing that makes music so darn interesting.
So that’s all I have to say ‘bout them bands with animal names. Just a bunch of fellas playin’ music and callin’ themselves after critters. Makes ya think, don’t it?
