Okay, so, I was messing around online, just killing time, and I got this random idea. I wanted to see how many songs I could find that had “cat” in the title. Sounds simple, right? Well, let me tell you, it turned into a whole thing.

First, I just started typing stuff into the search bar, like “songs with cat in the title”. You wouldn’t believe the results! It’s a wild mix. There are tons of songs out there about our furry friends.
Then, I started looking at band names. Oh boy, that’s a rabbit hole. You got your “Hepcat”, “Cheetah Girls”, “Def Leppard” – which, you know, kinda counts – and even “Faster Pussycat”. Who knew so many bands were inspired by cats? I guess it makes sense, cats are pretty cool, and let’s be honest, they’ve got that rockstar attitude.
After that, I dug a little deeper into some classic hits. “Cat’s In The Cradle” by Harry Chapin, that’s a given. Everybody knows that one. And then there’s “Year Of The Cat” by Al Stewart. That song is so catchy, but also, like, what does it even mean? It’s a mystery wrapped in a cool tune. Alan Parsons produced it, which is also pretty neat.
I made a list, just jotting down all the songs I could find. It got pretty long! Here’s a little snippet of what I found:
- “Cat’s In The Cradle” – Harry Chapin
- “Year Of The Cat” – Al Stewart
I realized something pretty interesting, though. The word “cat” is used in so many different ways in music. You’ve got love songs, you’ve got silly songs, songs from musicals, pop songs… It’s crazy! It seems like people have been writing songs about cats for as long as we’ve had them around.
So yeah, that’s how I spent my afternoon. It was a fun little project, and I ended up learning a lot more about cat-themed songs than I ever expected. It just goes to show, you never know what you’ll find when you start exploring! I mean these songs showcase the versatility of the word “cat” in * musical theatre to pop, from silly tunes to love songs, cats have been written about and sung to.
