Alright, so I’ve been a huge Tears for Fears fan since, like, forever. And I always get into these debates with my friends about which album is the best. So, I finally decided to sit down and really figure out my own personal ranking, once and for all. It was tougher than I thought!

First, I pulled out all my old CDs and, yeah, even some cassette tapes. Don’t judge! I wanted to have everything in front of me. Then, I fired up my music player and started listening, from the very beginning.
My Listening Marathon
- The Hurting (1983): Man, this one takes me back. So much raw emotion, so dark and synth-y. “Mad World,” “Pale Shelter,” “Change”… absolute classics. I spent a whole afternoon just soaking it in. It is a really good album, but maybe a bit too heavy for constant replay.
- Songs from the Big Chair (1985): Okay, this is where things get tricky. This album is HUGE. “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” “Head Over Heels”… I mean, come on! I danced around my living room like an idiot, remembering all the lyrics. It is undeniably their most commercially successful, and for a good reason.
- The Seeds of Love (1989): This one is just beautiful, a masterpiece. “Sowing the Seeds of Love,” “Woman in Chains,” “Advice for the Young at Heart”… It is so layered and complex, a real departure. I got lost in this one for hours, just marveling at the musicianship.
- Elemental (1993): This is the first of the post-Curt Smith albums. “Break It Down Again” is a solid track and I played this CD many times.
- Raoul and the Kings of Spain (1995): I re-listened this album a few times. It’s got some good moments, but it feels like it’s searching for something, you know?
- Everybody Loves a Happy Ending (2004): The reunion! Hearing Roland and Curt together again was amazing. The title track is an instant classic, and “Closest Thing to Heaven” is just gorgeous. I was so hyped when this came out, and it still holds up.
- The Tipping Point (2022): I remember first hearing the singles from the record and preordering my copy. I listened to the record the day it came out on repeat.
My Final Verdict (For Now…)
After all that listening, and a lot of soul-searching, here’s my personal ranking. It might change tomorrow, but this is how I feel today:
- The Seeds of Love
- Songs from the Big Chair
- The Hurting
- The Tipping Point
- Everybody Loves a Happy Ending
- Elemental
- Raoul and the Kings of Spain
It was super hard putting The Hurting below the top 2, but I went with what makes the most of my listening habits. I can always go back and change it again, if I really wanted to. And, I guess that’s the best part of my journey. I rediscovered the magic of these albums again.
