Today, I decided to dive into the world of movies and compile a list of films centered around the theme of “home.” It’s a broad topic, I know, so I had to figure out where to even begin!

Brainstorming and Searching
First, I grabbed my notebook and jotted down some initial ideas. What does “home” even mean? Is it a place? A feeling? People? I came up with a bunch of keywords like “family,” “childhood,” “nostalgia,” “belonging,” and even “house” itself.
Then, I hit the internet. I started with simple Google searches like “best movies about home” and “films about family.” This gave me some obvious starting points, a few classics I already knew.
- “Home Alone” – of course!
- “The Wizard of Oz” – “There’s no place like home,” right?
- “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” – E.T. just wants to phone home!
Digging Deeper
But I wanted more than just the super famous ones. I started looking at curated lists on movie websites. I also checked out some film forums where people were discussing similar topics. This helped me discover some lesser-known gems that I’d never heard of before.
It’s kind of fun to become a detective in this way.
Making My List
As I found movies, I added them to a list in my notebook. I also made a note of why each film fit the “home” theme, whether it was about returning home, finding a new home, or losing a home. The list became a bit like, well, a home in itself. I mean, it is a collection that gives the feeling of comfort and satisfaction. So that is home.
Watching and Reflecting
Now, the best part: I started watching some of the movies I’d found! Some were heartwarming, others were sad, and a few were even a little scary. But they all made me think about what “home” really means to me.

It’s an ongoing project, for sure. I’ll probably keep adding to my list and watching more films. It’s amazing how many different ways a movie can explore such a simple, yet complex, idea like “home.”
And the list will continue to grow, the more I watch, the more the list will change.
The watching part is the essential part.
