Okay, so I was digging around for some movies like “City of God” the other day. You know, that Brazilian flick that just blew everyone away back in the day? It was a real eye-opener, and I was itching to find something that could give me that same kind of rush.

I started by just hitting up Google, typing in “movies similar to City of God.” The usual stuff popped up, you know, the same old lists on those movie sites. There’s this one site, I think it’s called “Letterboxd” or something like that, and they had a list of like 68 films that they said were similar. 68! That’s a lot to go through. I found that some other sites had the same number. It looked like they were all getting their info from some database called TMDb.
Then I was browsing around, trying to see what people were saying about these recommendations. A lot of folks were saying that these weren’t just knock-offs, but actually good movies in their own way. That got me a little more interested. I mean, I’m not looking for a carbon copy of “City of God,” just something with that same kind of vibe, you know?
I stumbled upon this site called “Filmaffinity”. Apparently, it’s a place where you can rate movies and get recommendations based on what you like. It’s like a social network for movie buffs, I guess. People leave reviews, make lists, and vote on stuff. It sounded interesting, so I spent some time there, poking around and seeing what folks had to say about movies like “City of God.”
One thing I noticed is that people kept bringing up this “Pusher” trilogy by some guy named Refn. I hadn’t heard of it, but it seemed like it had a similar kind of gritty, street-level feel. I made a mental note to check that out later.
And then, out of nowhere, I saw something about “City of God” getting a sequel series on HBO! Can you believe it? It’s called “City of God: The Fight Rages On.” I guess it just dropped recently. That’s definitely going on my watchlist.
So yeah, that’s where I’m at now. I’ve got a bunch of leads, a few solid recommendations, and a new series to look forward to. It took some digging, but I think I’m on the right track to finding my next cinematic obsession. I’ll keep you guys posted on what I find!

- Started by searching “movies similar to City of God” on Google.
- Found a list of 68 similar films on Letterboxd, apparently sourced from TMDb.
- Read comments indicating the recommendations were generally well-regarded.
- Explored Filmaffinity, a movie recommendation site with social networking features.
- Noted the “Pusher” trilogy by Refn as a potential good fit.
- Discovered a sequel series to “City of God” on HBO called “City of God: The Fight Rages On.”
It was a pretty productive search, if I do say so myself. I’m excited to dive into these movies and see what all the fuss is about. Maybe I’ll even find a new favorite or two. You never know, right?
Next Steps
I guess my next move is to actually start watching some of these flicks. I’ll probably start with that “Pusher” trilogy, since it keeps coming up. And of course, I gotta check out that HBO sequel series. I’m pretty pumped about that one. I’ll let you guys know what I think after I’ve had a chance to watch them. Stay tuned!
