Today I am ranking Billy Joel’s albums, this thing just came to me the other day when I was listening to some classic rock.

So, the first thing I did was to grab all of Joel’s albums. I mean ALL of them. Then, I started listening to them one by one, you know, really diving deep into the music and his style in each album. I started with his early stuff like “Piano Man” from ’73. That song is iconic, right? It’s like his signature tune. I can still remember vividly how I sang along with it when I heard it on my car’s radio for the very first time!
Moving on, I listened to “Streetlife Serenade” and “Turnstiles”, and then, bam, “The Stranger” in ’77. This album was huge, and it became Columbia Records’ biggest selling album until 1985. And “Just the Way You Are” from that album? Two Grammy Awards in ’78! Then I hit up “52nd Street” at the end of the decade, his first number-one album.
- Listened through each album from start to finish.
- Noted down my favorite tracks and overall vibe of each album.
- Even the last three songs of some albums are not that great, I still finished them all.
After that, I got into the 80s with “Glass Houses”. And then I played “Storm Front” from ’89. You know “We Didn’t Start the Fire”? That song was a massive hit, two weeks at number one. And guess what? “Storm Front” became his first number-one album since “Glass Houses”. This is so cool, isn’t it?
With all this listening done, I started ranking them. It wasn’t easy, I changed my mind a few times. I mean, how do you rank such masterpieces? But I did it. I put “The Stranger” at the top. It just had to be. It’s routinely cited as Joel’s best, and I totally agree.
So, that was my little adventure ranking Billy Joel’s albums. It was a fun trip down memory lane and a great way to appreciate his musical journey.
