Okay, so I’ve been digging into Van Morrison’s stuff lately. Man, that guy’s got a catalog! Figuring out where to start was a real head-scratcher, so I figured I’d share my little journey here for anyone else who’s curious. You know, save you some time.

First off, I started by just googling “best Van Morrison albums.” That was a mistake. Way too much info, and everyone’s got a different opinion. I saw a bunch of sites, including some lists from Rolling Stone and some sites I’ve never heard of. I started to try to make a list of the top 10.
- Astral Weeks
- Moondance
- Hymns To The Silence
- Saint Dominic’s Preview
- Tupelo Honey
- His Band and the Street Choir
- Veedon Fleece
- Into the Music
- Common One
- Beautiful Vision
Then I started to do research on Van Morrison himself. Apparently, he was only 23 when he made “Astral Weeks” which a lot of people consider to be his best work. I also found out that he is friends with Bob Dylan. They have been friends for over 40 years. I decided to look at some of the albums on their own.
“Astral Weeks”
This one kept popping up as number one on almost every list. Lots of folks called it a “masterpiece.” So, I decided that was my starting point. I found a used copy at a local record store – score! – and gave it a spin.
Honestly, it wasn’t what I expected. Not exactly catchy, you know? But the more I listened, the more it grew on me. It’s got this, like, poetic vibe. And the bass player, Richard Davis, his playing is almost like another voice on the album. Really cool stuff. I listened to it a few more times, letting it soak in. It’s definitely an album that reveals more of itself with each listen.
“Moondance”
After “Astral Weeks,” I figured I’d check out “Moondance.” This one’s a bit more, I guess you’d say, accessible. It’s got that famous title track, and the whole album just has a really good flow. I put this one on while I was cooking dinner one night, and it was the perfect soundtrack. Upbeat, soulful, just good vibes all around.
“Hymns to the Silence”
Then, I stumbled across this two-disc set called “Hymns to the Silence.” It’s a bit more mellow, more introspective. I put this one on when I needed to chill out after a long day. It’s got some really beautiful moments, but it’s definitely not something you’d put on at a party, you know?

So, yeah, that’s where I’m at right now. I’ve barely scratched the surface of Van Morrison’s discography, but I’m hooked. It’s a wild ride, going from the jazzy, experimental sounds of “Astral Weeks” to the more soulful, R&B feel of “Moondance,” and then to the quieter, more reflective stuff like “Hymns to the Silence.” I’m thinking my next stop might be “Tupelo Honey” or maybe “Saint Dominic’s Preview.” We’ll see where the music takes me.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience so far. If you’re a Van Morrison fan, let me know what your favorite albums are. And if you’re new to his stuff, hopefully, this gives you a decent starting point. Happy listening!
