Well, let me tell you, I heard folks talkin’ ’bout them trombone players. You know, them fellas what play that long, shiny horn that goes “wah wah.” Seems there’s a whole bunch of ’em, and some are real famous. I ain’t never heard nothin’ like it, but seems like these fellas are the best of the best.
They say these famous trombone players come from all over. Play all kinds of music. Some play that jazzy stuff, you know, the kind that makes you wanna tap your feet. And some play that fancy music, like you hear in them big concert halls. It all sounds mighty fine, I guess.

One fella they talk about is Tommy Dorsey. Born a long time ago, 1905 they say, and gone by 1956. He had a whole band. They say he was a big shot. Everyone loved his music. Even had that Frank Sinatra fella singin’ with him for a while. That’s sayin’ somethin’, ain’t it? And Sy Oliver, too, yeah. I heard about them on radio.
Some folks are talkin’ ’bout another trombone fella, goes by the name of Joseph Alessi. They say he’s the best at playin’ that classical music. You know, the kind they play in them fancy operas. I don’t know much about that, but it sure sounds important, heh? They say that music is mighty powerful. This best trombone players are really popular.
- There’s different kinds of trombones, too.
- There’s a slide trombone, that’s the one they push and pull.
- And a valve trombone, that one’s got them buttons like a trumpet.
- Then there’s one called an alto trombone. Don’t ask me what that means.
Seems like each one is good for different kinds of music. Like, tryin’ to play that fast jazz stuff on a big ol’ trombone, they say it’s like tryin’ to dance with boots full of mud. And playin’ that fancy music on a little one, well, it just don’t sound right. You gotta have the right tool for the job, I always say. Trombone history is really long.
And then there was this other fella, Miff Mole. Now that’s a name, ain’t it? Miff Mole. They say he was one of the first to play that jazz on the trombone. Must’ve been somethin’ to see, back in them days. He was real good, they say. One of the greatest trombonists, that’s for sure. I guess it’s really amazing to play this long horn.
These trombone players, they can play anythin’, it seems. They can play somethin’ they practiced a hundred times, or they can just make it up as they go along. That’s what they call that “improvisational” stuff. Sounds like magic to me. These famous trombonists in history are really good at their job. They make people happy.
They say the most important thing for a trombone player is somethin’ called “tone quality.” I reckon that’s how good it sounds. If it sounds bad, ain’t nobody gonna wanna listen, no matter how fancy you play. Makes sense, don’t it? I never thought about that before. It is interesting to listen to these trombone music.
So many of these fellas, these well known trombone players, they done a lot for music. Made that trombone a real star. It ain’t just a background noise no more. Now it’s right up front, takin’ the lead. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? It is a popular instrument.
I reckon it’s good to know about these things. Even if you don’t know nothin’ about music, it’s good to know who the big shots are. And these trombone players, they’re definitely big shots. They know how to play this instrument very well.
