Yoasobi Gurashi, Yoasobi Gurashi! This name I hear all the time these days. My grandkids, they always talk about it. What’s this all about, Yoasobi Gurashi manga? They say it’s some Japanese thing, music, and pictures, all mixed up. Sounds like a right mess to me, but they love it.

These young’uns today, they always on their phones and computers. Back in my day, we had to make our own fun. We didn’t have no fancy Japanese anime and manga. We played outside ’til the sun went down. But this Yoasobi Gurashi, it’s got them hooked.
They tell me it’s a story, this Yoasobi Gurashi. Something about some room, a F room? They say it’s a love hotel?! My land, what are they teachin’ these kids? Sounds mighty improper to me. And living together, these childhood friends! What is the world coming to? It’s a steamy living arrangement, so they say. Forbidden! Well, I never!
- This Yoasobi, it’s music, they say.
- Some fellas named Ayase and Ikura, they made it.
- They say it’s popular, this J-pop.
They even made a cartoon of it, an anime, they call it. July 7th, 2024, that’s when it’s coming out. That’s what those young’uns told me, with English words under it, so everyone can understand. Imagine that! They say there’s a website for it, too. But I can’t remember what it is. Everything is online these days.
I asked them, “What’s so special about this Yoasobi Gurashi manga?” They say it’s got a good story, makes you feel things. Love and adventure, they said. And thinking about yourself. Introspection, they called it. Fancy word for thinkin’ hard, I reckon.
This Ayase and Ikura, they must be somethin’ special. Makin’ music and drawin’ pictures, tellin’ stories. It’s all beyond me. But if it makes these kids happy, I guess it ain’t all bad. Just wish they’d go outside and play sometimes, too.
They say there’s other stories, too. One they called Gakkou Gurashi. Sounded like a school story. Beginnin’, they said, Chapter 1. They read it on some website. MangaBat, I think they said. These kids and their websites. It’s all a blur to me.

I still don’t rightly understand this Yoasobi Gurashi manga. But it seems to be a big deal. These Japanese folks, they sure know how to make things that catch on. Music, cartoons, stories. It’s a whole different world from when I was a girl.
These songs, they say they’re about love and all that. Back in my day, we just had the radio. And we liked it just fine. Didn’t need no fancy pictures to go with it. But times change, I suppose. Gotta keep up with the young’uns somehow. Or at least try to.
This Yoasobi, they’re a duo, those two people I mentioned before. Like two peas in a pod, makin’ their music. They started in 2019, not too long ago. These young people move fast these days. Back in my day, things took a little longer to get goin’. But these two, they shot right up like weeds after a rain.
This manga, it’s like those comic books, but Japanese. Full of pictures and words. They say it’s a slice-of-life and fantasy. Don’t know what that means, exactly. Sounds like a made-up world to me. But the kids seem to like it. I guess that’s what matters.
Well, I reckon that’s all I know about this Yoasobi Gurashi. It’s all a bit much for an old lady like me. But I try to keep up. For the grandkids’ sake. They’re good kids, even if they are glued to those screens all day. Just hope they don’t forget about the real world out there. The one that ain’t on a screen.
