Alright, let’s talk about this SeaWorld thing and that movie, “Blackfish,” and what happened to that poor gal, Dawn Brancheau. I ain’t no fancy writer, so I’m just gonna tell it like it is, plain and simple.
What’s this “Blackfish” fuss all about?
So, this movie, “Blackfish,” came out and stirred up a whole heap of trouble for SeaWorld. It told the story of Tilikum, a big ol’ orca whale they had, and how things weren’t so rosy for these whales in captivity. They showed some sad stuff, whales gettin’ all riled up and people gettin’ hurt. And then there was that awful thing that happened to Dawn… Real heartbreaking, it was.
- The movie showed how these whales, they ain’t meant to be cooped up in tanks. They got families, just like us, and they need to swim free in the ocean.
- Folks got real mad after seein’ that movie. They started yellin’ at SeaWorld, sayin’ they were treatin’ the whales bad. Lots of people stopped goin’ to their shows.
- SeaWorld, they didn’t like that movie one bit. They said it wasn’t tellin’ the whole story, that it was makin’ them look worse than they are.
SeaWorld’s side of the story, or so they say
Now, SeaWorld, they started talkin’ back, tryin’ to make themselves look better. They put out all sorts of statements and ads, sayin’ how much they care about the whales and how they’re doin’ good work for conservation. They said they take good care of their whales, feed ‘em good, give ‘em toys to play with.
But folks weren’t buyin’ it. They said SeaWorld was just tryin’ to cover their tracks. They said the whales were still sufferin’, even if they were gettin’ fed and playin’ with toys.
What about Dawn Brancheau?
The worst part of it all was what happened to Dawn Brancheau. She was a trainer at SeaWorld, and she loved them whales. But one day, Tilikum, that big orca from the movie, he grabbed her and pulled her under the water. She didn’t make it. It was just awful, a real tragedy.
SeaWorld said it was a terrible accident, that Dawn made a mistake. But lots of people blamed SeaWorld. They said if Tilikum hadn’t been kept in captivity, he wouldn’t have done that. They said SeaWorld put Dawn in danger.
The fight over keeping whales captive
After that movie and Dawn’s death, people started fightin’ harder to get them whales out of SeaWorld and other places like it. They said it just ain’t right to keep such big, smart creatures locked up in tanks. They said it’s cruel and unnatural.
SeaWorld finally said they’d stop breedin’ orcas, which means no more baby whales in captivity. That was a big deal, but some folks still ain’t happy. They want all the whales to be set free, sent back to the ocean where they belong.
What I think about it all
Now, I ain’t no expert on whales or nothin’, but I got a good heart, and I know right from wrong. And to me, it just don’t seem right to keep them whales cooped up like that. They’re meant to be swimmin’ free, huntin’ for fish, livin’ with their families. Not doin’ tricks for a bunch of people.
And that poor Dawn… she shouldn’t have died like that. It breaks my heart to think about it. Maybe if those whales had been left in the ocean, where they belong, none of this would have happened. It’s a sad, sad story, and I hope them whales get to go home someday.
SeaWorld gotta change
SeaWorld, they gotta do better. They can say they love them whales all they want, but actions speak louder than words. They gotta show us they really care, that they ain’t just in it for the money. They gotta make things right, for the whales and for Dawn.
And as for us, we gotta keep speakin’ up for them whales. We gotta let SeaWorld know that we ain’t gonna stand for it no more. We gotta keep fightin’ until all them whales are swimmin’ free.
The future of orcas in captivity
I hear tell there’s still a bunch of these whales in captivity all over the world, more than fifty of ’em. Makes me wonder what’s gonna happen to them. Will they ever get to see the ocean? Will they ever get to be with their families again? It’s a worry, it truly is.
And it ain’t just SeaWorld, there’s other places too that keep these whales. They all need to listen to what people are sayin’ and do the right thing. It’s time for a change, a big change. Them whales deserve better, and we gotta make sure they get it. It’s a long hard road, but we gotta keep walkin’ it.
Remembering Dawn
And we can’t forget Dawn, neither. She loved them whales, and she didn’t deserve what happened to her. We gotta keep her memory alive, and we gotta keep fightin’ for what she believed in. She wouldn’t want us to give up, and we ain’t gonna. Not now, not ever. We owe it to her, and we owe it to them whales.
