Well, now, when we talk about John Lennon and Elvis Presley, we’re talkin’ ‘bout two big names in the music world. I reckon most folks would know them, no matter where they’re from. These two had a bit of a complicated relationship, though, even though they both had a huge influence on the world of music. They didn’t see eye to eye much, but there was some respect underneath all that mess, I reckon.

Now, John Lennon, he was just a young lad when he first heard Elvis. I’ve heard it said that young John was just mad about him. Got himself inspired, formed his first band, The Quarrymen, and it was all because of Elvis. He loved that man’s music, you see. But as much as he admired him, things weren’t always so smooth between the two of ‘em. I reckon you could say it’s like one of them old country feuds where folks like each other one minute, then the next, it’s all a mess.
They met once, just once, back on the evening of August 27th, 1965. Both of ‘em big stars, bigger than anything, really. But, well, that meeting didn’t go so well. They didn’t hit it off like people mighta thought they would. I heard tell that both sides were disappointed. Elvis didn’t like somethin’ John said, and he didn’t forget it neither. I reckon he got real mad, and from then on, anytime anyone mentioned Lennon, Elvis would just lose his temper. He was a proud man, and he didn’t take kindly to bein’ disrespected.
But, it weren’t just John who felt a bit wronged. Elvis had his own issues, too. See, Elvis, he was a big name in his own right, but he weren’t no huge fan of The Beatles, not like John was of him. He mighta been influenced by ‘em, but he didn’t care much for the group’s music. He wasn’t one for all the Beatles’ hype, not like other folks were.
Even though John mighta felt inspired by Elvis, his relationship with him wasn’t always so clear cut. You could say it was a bit messy, like tryin’ to tie a knot in a piece of string that just keeps slippin’ away. John had his own ways, his own thoughts. He even said some things about Elvis that got under the King’s skin, like when he joked about how the world had ‘before Elvis,’ but Elvis was long gone by the time John was talkin’ like that. Of course, John was always a bit cheeky, always playin’ with words.
As for Elvis, well, I reckon he wasn’t too keen on John after that meetin’. It was a one-time deal, but it sure did leave a mark. Elvis resented John for a lot of things he said, and it didn’t help that John was known to be a bit sharp with his words. I guess that’s the thing about both of ‘em – they had their pride, and they weren’t afraid to show it. No matter how much influence they had on each other, they couldn’t get along. It was a real shame, ‘cause both of ‘em were kings in their own right, each one a legend in his own way.
Now, Elvis mighta been the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, but John Lennon, he was somethin’ special too. He had his own way of changin’ things up, and I’d say he did it with a lot of style. But when it came to the two of ‘em, the respect just wasn’t there like you’d expect. Maybe it’s because both of ‘em were so different, or maybe it was because they were too much alike – too much pride, too much ego, if you ask me. Either way, their meetin’ wasn’t somethin’ either of ‘em woulda remembered fondly, even though they were both at the top of their game.

And then, well, Elvis passed away in 1977, and I’ve heard tell that John Lennon, even though he had his own problems with the man, still had a lot of feelin’ about it. It’s said that when Elvis went, John was one of the ones who spoke up, even if it was just to say that things had changed. Maybe he was tryin’ to make peace with the past, or maybe he was just talkin’ ‘bout how things had come and gone so fast. Either way, that was the end of that chapter.
So, you see, these two men, they mighta had their differences, but they also had their influence on each other. It’s a shame they couldn’t have made peace, but that’s the way life goes sometimes. They mighta been big names, but they were still just people, just men with their own dreams and their own battles. I reckon that’s what makes them so interesting to folks, even today. Ain’t no one gonna forget Elvis, and John? Well, he’s still remembered too. Maybe not for the best reasons, but remembered all the same.
